How to Cook Teriyaki Salmon and Prepare the Teriyaki Sauce

To make this salmon all you have to do prep a quick teriyaki sauce, then pour over salmon fillets and bake it in the oven until cooked through.

To start you’ll mince garlic, and ginger. Add that to a saucepan along with soy sauce, water, honey, brown sugar and fresh lemon juice.

Bring that mixture to a light boil then stir in a water/cornstarch slurry (which will thicken the sauce up perfectly) and let that boil for a minute.

Then place the salmon in a sprayed baking dish, pour the sauce over the salmon, bake it in the oven for 12 – 15 minutes. Sprinkle on a few garnishes if desired and your moments away from such a tasty dinner!

Baked Teriyaki Salmon or Pan Seared

You could also pan fry the salmon if you’d rather, then pour the sauce over after it’s cooked. But I do like here how baking it allows some time for the sauce to seep into the salmon and give it some flavor.

And if you like one more layer of flavor try it with a little sesame oil , about 1/4 – 1/2 tsp. A little goes a long way. It’s definitely optional and I don’t always add it.

What to Serve with Teriyaki Salmon

I like the look of the white rice here but to make it healthier I do prefer to serve it with brown rice. Have you tried making brown rice in your Instant Pot yet?? I did the other day and it worked great!

And good options for steamed or sautéed veggies to pair with this include asparagus (take advantage of it right now while it’s in season), broccoli, carrots, zucchini, bok choy, or cabbage.

I love this recipe because it’s definitely family friendly, as in picky kids will even go for it. It’s packed with flavor and so easy to make. Add it to the to-do list this week you’ll love it!

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees and spray a baking dish* with non-stick cooking spray.
  • In a small saucepan whisk together low-sodium soy sauce, 6 Tbsp water, honey, brown sugar, garlic, ginger and lemon juice and bring mixture to a light boil over medium heat.
  • Whisk together cornstarch with remaining 2 Tbsp water, then add to sauce mixture in saucepan.
  • Let mixture boil, whisking constantly, for 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Place salmon in baking dish then pour teriyaki sauce evenly over salmon (I also like to lift the fillets up so the sauce runs right under).
  • Bake in preheated oven 12 - 15 minutes until salmon has cooked through (cooked time will vary depending on thickness of salmon).
  • Serve warm topped with some of the teriyaki sauce from the baking dish (use excess sauce for steamed asparagus or broccoli on the side) and chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
  • *I recommend using a baking dish that's just large enough to fit salmon while leaving a little space between fillets.

Thank you for sharing this recipe! I tried this tonight for our dinner! And My employer and her family like it so much! They said it’s really good! I used frozen salmon coz we dont have fresh one and i pan fry it instead of bake coz no time to bake as i had chicken inside the oven. But then they cannot tellthat the salmon was donepan fried coz it still soft and juicy! We had broiled chicken and salmon and vegetables for dinner. The teriyaki sauce is perfect for chicken as well! Yummy! Have to make it again!

How do you recommend baking the salmon to prevent it from drying out?

    • Jaclyn

      Jaclyn Bell

Just as directed, as long as you don’t over-bake it it shouldn’t dry out. Check the center at the lesser time listed.

  • Nancy

Sounds delicious! I want to make this tonight. In the ingredients list you put 1/2 cup of soy sauce, but in the directions it says 1/4 cup, which one is correct?

Oh sorry for the confusion, it says teriyaki sauce which is just the mixture made from the soy sauce and other ingredients.

She was not referring to the 1/4 c teriyaki sauce reference in the later paragraph. She was referring to the list of ingredients for SOY sauce. It states you need 1/2 c. in the list. HOWEVER, in the directions, it states you only use 1/4 c. of soy. Which is it?

Thats 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp water that’s why there’s the comma there after the soy sauce – is that the part you mean? Sorry for the confusion! It is 1/2 cup soy.

          • Chelan

OK, :) I think I understand now. It may help clarify by editing the recipe a bit – just on that line – to say, “In a small saucepan whisk together 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce, 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp of the water,…”
            Thank you!

This is one of the best teriyaki sauces I have ever made! I like it because there is no vinegar in it, which is something my children do not care for. I made this with chicken instead of salmon, and it was delicious. Thank you.

I just made this recipe for dinner. It was absolutely delicious. My husband loved it and even my 18 month old daughter ate it with vigor! Thank you!

I just made a batch of this teriyaki sauce, and I LOVE it! I substituted fresh ginger for ground ginger and used some mirin instead of lemon juice. ABSOLUTELY YUM!
