What’s the Best Lettuce for Lettuce Wraps?

For the best crunch and the sturdiest wrap, you’ll want to use either Bibb lettuce or Iceberg lettuce. Romaine works in a pinch, but its leaves are longer, which makes it tougher to form wraps.

Should I Make Ground Turkey or Ground Chicken Lettuce Wraps?

I’ve made this recipe using both ground chicken and ground turkey and both work great. I usually use ground turkey because that’s what I have on hand, but just use what you like or what’s on sale.

Tips for the Best 20 Minute P.F. Chang’s Lettuce Wraps

  • If you are looking for even more protein, you could swap the water chestnuts out with chopped walnuts.
  • These are great for meal prepping. Store the lettuce and filling separately, and assemble when ready to eat!
  • For a slightly spicy filling, add in a few tablespoons of Sriracha.

Ingredients

  • 3 tsp olive oil, divided
  • 1 lb 93% lean ground turkey or chicken
  • 4 - 5 Tbsp hoisin sauce,* to taste
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce, (low-sodium or regular)
  • 2 tsp sriracha (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp minced fresh garlic (3 cloves)
  • 1 Tbsp peeled and minced fresh ginger
  • 2/3 cup sliced green onions, white and light green portion, plus more green portion for serving
  • 1 medium carrot, peeled and shredded (1/2 cup)
  • 1 (8 oz) can water chestnuts, drained and chopped small
  • 1 large head Bibb lettuce or iceberg lettuce

Instructions

  • Heat 1 1/2 tsp oil in a 12-inch non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add turkey or chicken in large crumbles then let cook until slightly browned on bottom, about 3 minutes, then break up and continue to cook until it's fully cooked through, about 3 minutes longer.
  • Meanwhile while turkey is cooking in a mixing bowl whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sriracha, rice vinegar, sesame oil, then set aside.
  • Drain of excess liquid from turkey (if there is any) then push to one far side of pan and pull that side of pan off heat.
  • Heat remaining 1 1/2 tsp oil in now empty side of skillet.
  • Add green onions and carrots and saute 1 1/2 minutes. Add in garlic and ginger and saute 30 seconds longer.
  • Pour in sauce and water chestnuts then cook and toss 30 seconds longer.
  • Serve warm in lettuce leaves garnished with sliced green onions.

Notes

  • *I like Sun Luck Hoisin sauce or Lee Kum Kee Hoisin sauce.
  • If you are looking for even more protein, you could swap the water chestnuts out with chopped walnuts.

I am excited to try this but I would appreciate more than ingredients. Quantities would be helpful. I’m not that experienced that quantities/proportions/ratios are not obvious to me.

Sorry for any confusion, if you keep scrolling down the page you’ll see ingredient amounts and directions in a recipe box.

Gave this recipe a try for dinner. Made it gluten-free but had to omit the hoisin sauce and made up for it with extra honey and soy sauce. Also added sprouted lentils and cubes of tofu. Simple recipe. Easy to follow. Delicious. It’s definitely added to my go-to recipes for lettuce wraps (because each recipe is unique and the yummy ones are worth repeating).

Made these last night for dinner and they were a huge hit, even with my very picky eater hubby. My husband is a meat & potatoes guy and doesn’t eat many veggies. I added some of the water chestnuts and left them cut large in case he wanted to pick them out. He ate them and said he thinks even if I added more he would still enjoy them. The flavors worked so well together and best part is I had all the ingredients in my pantry. So not having to buy ingredients I will likely never use again is a bonus. The ingredients used worked so well I was blown away how this tasted once mixed in with the meat. I would like to try adding in a few peanuts next time. I did add bean sprouts to my wraps for that extra crunch & it worked great. I am so delighted my hubby really liked these. It is very hard to cook for the 2 of us because I love my veggies and certainly need them to keep my weight somewhat under control. With him not eating many veggies, it really limits what I can cook. This recipe will now be in my meal planning at least 4 or more times a month. Thank you so much for sharing, these truly rock!
