Oatmeal made eight different ways! Here I share EIGHT flavorful twists to make your cold fall mornings much more enjoyable! Each variation is easy to make and you’ll want to try them all.

Oatmeal for breakfast is totally my thing. I eat a bowl of it along with a fried egg almost every single morning.

It keeps me full until lunch and I just love the taste. And now that the cold fall mornings are here I’m loving it just that much more!

These are my favorite ways to make them. They don’t require a lot of ingredients but they turn plain and boring oatmeal into an exciting, extra delicious breakfast.

Banana Almond Flax Oatmeal

This is inspired by one of my all time favorite smoothies. It has a sweet banana nut flavor and it might just become a new go-to for you!

The flax in this one does thicken it up just a little so thin with more liquid after cooking as desired.

Berries and Cream Oatmeal

This one is little more indulgent, but 2 Tbsp of half and half is nothing in my mind. Worth it!

I can’t resist the flavor of berries and cream and here it’s made healthier with a generous dose of oats.

Chocolate Oatmeal

This chocolate flavor is like dessert for breakfast. It totally feels like cheating on a diet.

The overripe banana in this version keeps it sweet without having to add too much sugar.

Every good day starts with chocolate for breakfast :).

Banana Coconut Oatmeal

It’s like taking a tropical vacation. Any day, any time of year, in your pjs, without having to travel. Sign me up!

This trio of flavors with the bananas, coconut and nuts is dreamy!

Apple Pie Oatmeal

This version is one I’ve got on repeat right now. Because hello apple season.

The apples on top are just there so you know there’s actually apples in this one, which is why you won’t see them listed in the recipe.

But if you want that blend of soft tender apples in the oatmeal and the crisp ones on top feel free to add them.

Peanut Butter and Nutella Oatmeal

Need I say more here?

It’s pretty much Reese’s Oatmeal and you’ll love it down to the last little oat. Since we aren’t speaking in terms of crumbs ;).

And on the weekends feel free to looaaad on that Nutella. But really you’d be surprised how far 2 teaspoons will go here.

Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal

So yummy! This Is fall bliss in a morning bowl of oatmeal.

Skip the pumpkin pie you were planning on making today and start your morning out with all those flavors in your oatmeal instead.

I’m kidding though, never skip pie plans.

Brown Sugar Maple Oatmeal

And this last one is the easiest of them all.

You can buy real maple extract online if you can’t find it in the store  (herehere, and here) but the Mapleine/Watkins are pretty good too.

Can I Use Another Type of Milk for These Recipes?

With any of these recipes you can use almond milk or another non-dairy milk in place of the milk listed. Just replace the water with the non-dairy milk as well.

So for example use 1 cup unsweetened almond milk instead of 1/2 cup cows milk and 1/2 cup water. Organic cows milk is my personal favorite here though.

Can I Cook The Oatmeal on the Stovetop?

With any of these recipes you can cook on the stovetop instead of the microwave if desired.

To do so boil liquid then add oats and other ingredients and simmer about 5 minutes.

Can I Make More Than One Serving?

You can definitely double the recipes. Be sure to use an extra large bowl if cooking on the microwave so it doesn’t boil over.

Oatmeal Eight Ways

Included here are EIGHT delicious varieties of oatmeal, no more boring plain oatmeal and sugar everyday! These are perfectly comforting and hearty, and they're a great way to start your cold fall and winter days.

Base recipe

  • 1/2 cup rolled old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup milk (preferrably 2%)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 fair pinch salt

Almond Butter Banana Flax

  • 1/2 well ripened banana, mashed well
  • 1 Tbsp ground flax seeds
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp almond butter
  • 1 tsp honey, or to taste
  • 6 drops almond extract

Peanut Butter Nutella

  • 2 Tbsp peanut butter powder, such as PB2
  • 1 tsp honey, or to taste
  • 2 tsp Nutella
  • 1 Tbsp chopped unsalted peanuts

Banana Coconut

  • 1/2 cup canned light coconut milk (in place of 2% milk listed)
  • 1/2 well ripened banana, mashed well
  • 2 Tbsp shredded coconut
  • 1/8 tsp coconut extract
  • 1 tsp packed brown sugar, or to taste
  • 2 Tbsp chopped mixed unsalted nuts


  • 1/2 overripe banana, mashed well
  • 2 tsp dutch processed or regular unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp packed brown sugar, or to taste
  • 2 - 3 tsp mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 fresh strawberries, sliced (optional)

Maple Brown Sugar

  • 2 tsp packed brown sugar, or maple syrup
  • 4 drops maple extract, or to taste (each brand may vary a little in stength)
  • 2 Tbsp chopped pecans

Apple Pie

  • 2/3 cup peeled and finely chopped honey crisp apple
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp packed brown sugar or maple syrup, or to taste
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 Tbsp butter (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp dried cranberries and/or chopped walnuts (optional)

Pumpkin Pie

  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 tsp (scant) ground cinnamon
  • 1 fair pinch ground ginger
  • 1 fair pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup, or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 Tbsp chopped pecans

Berries and Cream

  • 1/2 cup mixed fresh berries or frozen, thawed and drained (dice strawberries)
  • 2 tsp honey, or to taste
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 Tbsp half and half


Almond Butter Banana Flax

  • In a medium microwave safe bowl* stir together oats, milk, water, salt, banana, and flax. Heat in microwave 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. Stir in almond butter, honey and almond extract. Let rest a few minutes to cool. Thin with a little more milk as needed. 

Peanut Butter Nutella

  • In a medium microwave safe bowl stir together oats, milk, water and salt. Heat in microwave 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. Stir in peanut butter powder and honey. Let cool a few minutes then dollop and swirl in Nutella. Top with peanuts. 

Banana Coconut

  • In a medium microwave safe bowl stir together oats, coconut milk, water, salt and banana. Heat in microwave 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. Stir in shredded coconut, brown sugar and coconut extract. Let cool several minutes. Top with nuts.


  • In a medium microwave safe bowl stir together oats, milk, water, salt, banana and cocoa powder. Heat in microwave 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. Stir in vanilla extract and brown sugar. Let cool several minutes then top with chocolate chips and strawberries.

Maple Brown Sugar

  • In a medium microwave safe bowl stir together oats, milk, water and salt. Heat in microwave 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. Stir in brown sugar and maple extract. Let cool several minutes. Top with pecans. 

Apple Pie

  • Add apples and water to a medium microwave safe bowl. Heat in microwave for 2 minutes. Then stir oats, milk, salt and cinnamon and heat 2 minutes longer. Stir in brown sugar, vanilla and butter. Let cool several minutes. Top with cranberries or walnuts if desired. 

Pumpkin Pie

  • In a medium microwave safe bowl stir together oats, milk, water, salt, pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Cook in microwave 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. Stir in maple syrup and vanilla extract and let cool several minutes. Top with pecans.

Berries and Cream

  • In a medium microwave safe bowl stir together oats, milk, water and salt. Cook in microwave 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. Stir in berries, honey and vanilla. Let cool several minutes. Top with half and half or cream.
  • *Any of these variations can be cooked on the stove top as well, just cook according to package directions.

    I’m allergic to bananas so could I sub them for apple sauce? I’m not usually a oatmeal person but I have 4 or more bags of oats from Christmas baking and want to use them up. I’m also lactose intolerant so could I use water to make oatmeal with?

      Applesauce should work fine as well. And almond milk or another dairy free milk or lactose free milk would be a good substitute. One of those options will give more flavor than water.

      Yes for the stove top you’ll just cook as directed on the oatmeal package, while adding in any mix-ins that’s listed to cook along with the oats, then add any remaining at the end. Hope you love them!

    I tried the maple brown sugar one this morning. It was delicious the perfect combination of sweet and maple. The only problem that I have is that it boiled over in the microwave. Any suggestions on how to stop that from happening. Thanks

      Glad you liked it! Next time I recommend using a bigger bowl. I went out and bought big bowls because I got tired of my oatmeal boiling over, definitely not the size pictured here sorry if that confused you. I put them into these bowls after cooking for a cleaner look.
